Getting around Fairfield

Welcome to Fairfield! We think you will find it easy to learn your way around this small town of 10,000, set up on a grid.

Many course participants rent a car for their stay, but some do not. If you do not plan to rent a car, find out if you can walk to the course location. Take into consideration not only the distance but the walkability--is there sidewalk, how busy is the street, etc.

For example, if you are staying at the Super 8, the distance may be either too far or too difficult to walk for some people, with only intermittent sidewalks along the busy Burlington Rd/Business Hwy 34. (Note that enterprising walkers and bikers can find back routes that avoid Burlington Road.) Other lodgings that are too far for walking for most include the AmericInn on S. Main, and the Jefferson County campgrounds.

-Contact Sharon Gilbert, our retreat registrar at info@trilliumawakeningfairfield.com before the course to learn if your preferred lodging will be close enough for walking.

A few options, if your lodging does not offer easy walking to downtown:

-you may be able to borrow or rent a bike. At this time, there is only one bike rental and that is the Rec Center at Maharishi University of Management. Their number is 641-472-1112. They rent bikes at a minimal cost for 3 days, and can renew if supplies allow. (They do have fairly heavy demand.) It may also be possible to borrow/rent a bike from a Fairfield resident in the Trillium community. Let us know if you are interested. We cannot promise to be able to locate one, however, so it's best to also pursue alternatives.

A ride sign-up sheet will be posted the Retreat location for people seeking or offering rides. Even so, we have found that setting up rides before the course is most effective.

Sometimes you might wish to leave an event before or after your ride. Feel free to ask a Fairfield Retreat participant for a ride. Fairfielders know that few destinations are more than 5-10 minutes out of their way.

If it becomes challenging to either find a ride or to walk, please let one of the teachers on the course know. They will do their best to help you make arrangements.

For your greatest peace of mind, we hope you can arrange transportation around Fairfield before you come.
